2025 PLAYA-WIDE COMPOST REGISTRATION IS HERE!

After 4 years of research and prototyping, we are launching The Compost Project in partnership with The Burning Man Project and the Green Theme Camp Community, under the leadership of Elyse Lee.

We’re piloting an educational and experiential food waste initiative to inspire 70k participants of Black Rock City to improve their conscientious relationship with food and climate change. This program will contribute to Burning Man’s 2030 goal to become carbon-negative, and promote ecological regenerative behavior.

Once sustainably successful, this venture will grow beyond this partnership to have further impact across the state of California and the US to reach all consumers.

The Compost Project.

How It Works:

  1. Pat yourself on the back that you’re excited to green your burn by reducing one of the most preventable GhG emission sources. Not only are you removing GhG, but regeneratively supporting agricultural ecosystems. We’re happy you’re here.

  2. Register your camp directly via Google Forms. You’ll receive an email with the same Donation link as above. Form is coming soon!

  3. Donate $5/camper to the Playa-Wide Compost Program, facilitated by IDEATE. We’re a registered non-profit and 100% of your donation goes to operating costs for the program.

  4. Train your camp! We accept all food scrap except for meat on-playa. The drier the better. We cannot accept heavily-contaminated scraps (unsorted), grease, or liquids of any kind. While meats/bones usually are compostable, we’re not composting ON-playa, but collecting material on-playa for transfer — which means that meats are just a little too stinky to sit out in hot sun safely.

  5. Drop off your camp Food Scraps at one of the participating sites on playa (including IDEATE!). Check for 2025 hours of operation. Get a high-five and share the good vibes.
